Selection Process and Training of the Slovenian Team for IJSO: A Case Study
Barbara Rovšek
Abstract
We recently joined the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) community; 2022 was our third year of participation. This article describes the selection process and training of the Slovenian team for IJSO; how we started and how we continue; what are our experiences, what we have already learned in this short time. It is a presentation of the case. We have our local specifics. What we do is based on the Slovenian school system, where a long tradition of knowledge competitions plays an important role. We describe how the team members performed in earlier stages of the competitions and how they qualified for the team. The importance of a multistage selection process and a large pool for initial selection are shown. We also highlight a critical problem, namely the underrepresentation of female students in the physics competition vertical in our country.
